Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said the abolition of the visa regime for the Moldovans who travel to the EU should take place before the expiration of the mandate of the European Commission, in July 2014. The statement was made in a news conference given by the Premier to present the Government’s report for the first 100 days, IPN reports.

“After we initial the Association Agreement and the Free Trade Agreement in Vilnius and, I hope, we obtain a favorable decision of the European Commission as regards the fulfillment by Moldova of the commitments concerning the visas, we will think about the next stage. I assure you that we are already involved in a plenary process of actions. We already agreed with the European Commission and with the member states that the two agreements will be signed during the current mandates of the European Parliament and the European Commission,” said Iurie Leanca.

He underlined that very clear statements have been made, including in areas that were earlier unwilling to discuss the visa subject, in support of the next decision of the European Commission that is to be announced in Vilnius.

The European elections will be held on May 22-25, 2014, while the new Parliament is to elect the President of the European Commission in July 2014. The President names the other 28 commissioners.
