Orthodox Christians who observe the old-style church calendar begin the Fast for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary tomorrow, August 14, also named the Saint Mary's Fast. It should be held until August 28, when the Assumption of the Virgin is celebrated.

Asked by IPN, Petru Storoja, priest of Saint Nicolae church in Chisinau, says that the fast is very strict, like the Lent before Easter. Fish is allowed only on August 19, when the Transfiguration of Jesus is celebrated. Otherwise, no meat, dairy, eggs are consumed.

The priest says that during this time parishioners need to observe fast not only where food is concerned but also from spiritual point of view. "Prayer, mercy and good deeds are key to fasting. If there is no forgiveness there is no true observance of the fast. If the fast is reduced to refraining from food, and one still continues to sin, it is like taking a step forward and then another step back,” Petru Storoja said.

On the first day of fasting, in some churches the Holy Cross is taken out. The service will be held on Sunday, August 18, then on August 19, when the Saviour's Transfiguration is celebrated. The mass will take place on August 25, Sunday, and August 28, when the Assumption of the Virgin Mary will be celebrated.

On the days when masses are held, Christians can receive the Eucharist.
