A man holding both Moldovan and Romanian citizenship was stopped at the Chisinau Airport after failing to declare 40,000 euros in cash.
The man, boarding a Vienna flight out of a VIP zone, declared only 8,500 euros. Upon closer scrutiny, the customs officers found an additional 40,000 euros in his luggage, with the money being ultimately seized.
By law, any amount exceeding the equivalent of 10,000 euros must be declared. The excess may be confiscated.
Over the course of last year, the border police at the Chisinau Airport thwarted 10 attempts to take cash illegally out of Moldova.
