Minister of Health Viorica Dumbrăveanu said the Moldovans have an “extraordinary” tendency to self-medicate at home, even for COVID-19. According to her, in some of the cases the persons died because they sought medical assistance too late, IPN reports.
“The World Health Organization reported on the efficiency of a preparation for treating COVID-19. The population showed an extraordinary tendency to buy this drug from drugstores. There is a negative tendency as regard self-medication. We have persons who regrettably died because they went to see a doctor too late. A lot of people haven’t seen the family doctor for many years. There is a lack of trust in the healthcare system. In such conditions, our key message is: when the person has symptoms and health problems, they should mandatorily see a doctor,” Viorica Dumbrăveanu stated in the program “Fourth Power” on N4 channel.
According to the information presented by the minister, there are now about 3,800 persons who are receiving treatment at home. More than 2,000 infected persons are being treated at hospitals. The data are incomplete because the real situation in the Transnistrian region is not known.
“The persons with mild forms of the disease continue to receive treatment at home. As a rule, except for nose drops, paracetamol is prescribed when the person has fever. If the person continues to have fever and needs treatment with antibiotics because the state of heath worsens, the treatment at home is replaced with treatment at the hospital,” said Viorica Dumbrăveanu.
The minister noted that only persons who do not form part of risk groups receive treatment at home. The children, pregnant women, persons older than 60 or those who suffer from heart disease, diabetes are mandatory treated at the hospital, regardless of their state of health.
