The protesters who spend the night in tents put up in front of the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) drink alcohol and have an inappropriate behavior at night, said the head of the General Police Inspectorate Viorel Cernăuțeanu. According to him, the protesters’ behavior cause discomfort to the residents of the city and the police therefore asked the Chisinau City Hall to authorize the protests only during the day, IPN reports.
As street lighting in Chisinau is partially disconnected, Viorel Cernăuțeanu said he requested the municipality to review the schedule of protests in the city. The protesters who stay in tents in front of the PGO can generate threats to the security of the inhabitants of the municipality.
“I came with this request for security reasons so as to ensure the safety of the inhabitants of Chisinau and of those who are in tents. A large part of the people, especially the residents of Chisinau, do not share the views of those who are in tents. To exclude the risks that can lead to unpleasant situations for everyone, I made such a request. During checks among protesters, we identified a person who possessed a banned object – a handmade knife. The person has a specific past. We are not against the citizens who come to state their view. When the police intervened, all the protesters complied but 20 young people came in an hour and impertinently tried to block the entrance to the PGO. Not those who are in tents pose risks. There are provokers who are brought,” Viorel Cernăuțeanu stated in the program “Shadow Cabinet” on JurnalTV channel.
The police demanded that protests should be permitted in Chisinau until it becomes dark so as not to endanger the life and security of those who pass by the PGO and of those who protest peacefully.
“When darkness falls, the people there dare to drink alcohol and they even overturned a public WC. This is a discomfort for the people who come to the waiting station. Protests should be permitted until it becomes night, when all the actions are visible, when any citizen can be a witness. I even heard calls inciting to destabilization on the part of the protest organizer,” said the official.
Viorel Cernăuțeanu also said that together with the partial disconnection of street lighting due to the energy crisis, the number of offenses in Chisinau hasn’t increased. The number of police officers who patrol the city was raised so as to ensure the security of citizens and to intervene promptly when antisocial activities are reported.
