The Republic of Moldova has the most inefficient central bank among the group of 16 countries analyzed by the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul” in terms of number and involvement of employees, IPN reports.
Study author Denis Gorea said “Viitorul” decided to compare the efficiency of the National Bank of Moldova’s employees with that of employees of the central banks of other states. In 2015, the NBM had 478 employees, while the National Bank of Sweden 386 employees. Thus, the ratio of the NBM employees to the GDP generated by Moldova is of 1 to US$ 14 million. In Romania, this ratio is of 1 to US$ 93 million.
According to the study authors, if the National Bank of Moldova wants to be at least as efficient as the National Bank of Romania, its total number of employees should be of 71.
The number of served citizens is another indicator of the efficiency of a public institution. In this case as well, the NBM is among the last ranked banks. An employee of the NBM serves 7,435 citizens of Moldova, by almost 1,000 people fewer than an employee of the central bank of Ukraine and by nearly 3,000 people fewer than an employee of the National Bank of Romania. Only Croatia has a lower position than Moldova in this regard.
The efficiency and activity of the National Bank of Moldova will be also examined from other angles. The studies will be presented once in two weeks.
