Having economic growth now, Romania can go further and invest money into Moldova, provided that there is control in Chisinau to ensure that the money goes where planned. This was stated by Romania's Prime Minister Victor Ponta in an interview with Radio Moldova. Ponta added that he intends to discuss this with his Moldovan counterpart Valeriu Strelet when he visits Chisinau on August 27.

Victor Ponta said he is glad that the last two-three years saw concrete actions in the bilateral relationship with Moldova, such as the construction of the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline, renovation of kindergartens or donation of minibuses. “It's not by chance that Romania has become Moldova's main trade partner”, he added. However, there is still much to be done as regards infrastructure and reforms.

Ponta went on to add that nobody in the EU is enthusiastic any longer about Romania supporting Moldova in its modernization processes.

“I am going to tell people in Chisinau that everything that Romania can do to help Moldova in difficult times will be done. We have never left you by the wayside and we'll never will”. Victor Ponta thinks that by choosing the path towards the EU, Moldova made the right decision, and everything that is done in Chisinau to implement the Association Agreement with the EU is for the better.

Ponta noted that while many positive changes can be seen in Moldova, there are also many things that move slowly. He remarked that since he became prime minister of Romania, Valeriu Strelets has been the fourth prime minister to be installed in Moldova, and “perhaps your country could use a little more stability”.

Ahead of Moldova's Independence Day, Victor Ponta told the Moldovans that they have friends and brothers across the Prut River who want to help them, adding that “power is in union”.
