Diplomacy is the only way by which we can seek the observance of human rights in the Transnistrian region, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Victor Osipov said when asked by Info-Prim Neo to comment on the last cases of inhuman treatment recorded in a Tiraspol penitentiary. “The possibilities of the constitutional authorities remained the same. We sensitize the Transnistrian authorities to these problems and warn them they should ensure the observance of human rights. But we have limited possibilities of imposing legal constraints on the penitentiaries in Transnistria,” Victor Osipov said. The Deputy Prime Minister also said that Moldova urges the partners in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process to contribute to the observance of human rights in the region through their own channels. On March 16, Promo-Lex Association said that a 34-year-old man held in penitentiary No. 3 in Tiraspol has been on hunger strike for 45 days and is now in a serious condition. He protested against the inhuman detention conditions and torture to which the prisoners are subjected. The administration of the penitentiary does not pay attention to the requests of the relatives and the civil society, while the young man has already said goodbye to his close persons. Last weekend, Promo-LEX informed that two prisoners of the same penitentiary went on hunger strike and were also in a critical condition. One of them cut his veins open in protest against inhuman treatment. Neither his relatives, nor the Association know in what state he is.
