“The early legislative elections will represent a disaster and will completely change the country’s development course. We know who the partners will be if a pro-Russian force comes to power. That’s why I’m against early elections and against the referendum on the direct election of the head of state,” the head of the organization in Moldova of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of Romania Victor Alexeev stated in the public debate “Which is the ‘lesser evil’ for the Republic of Moldova: unstable parliamentary majority, early elections, union, something else?”, which was the 49th installment of the series “Development of political culture by public debates”, held by IPN in partnership with Radio Moldova.

According to Victor Alexeev, if early elections are held, the ‘Turkmenistanization’ of the state will follow as the Republic of Moldova is the only country with a parliamentary system of government in the Commonwealth of Independent States and it should maintain this system. The population’s aspirations are to vote a pro-Russian President, but this won’t be the head of state of the country or of the people. “I hope a parliamentary majority will be formed. I don’t think it will be an unstable one and the next Government should set the objectives for the next three years because during these years the Republic of Moldova must be successful. This is the last chance of the country,” he stated.

The head of the Romanian PSD’s organization in Moldova noted that the Republic of Moldova needs a pro-European government further because, despite all the successes and failures, the country has yet at most one year to cover the path of European integration and to do the reforms required by the European community. “If we want to cover this road to Europe at least by the last car of this train, the European course of the Republic of Moldova must continue because when the Constitution of the European community is adopted, expectedly in 2017, the EU will no longer extend its borders,” said Victor Alexeev.

He also said that the union with Romania is a solution. “Romania is the greatest and best European partner of Moldova. I’m for the reunification of the nation, possibly inside the European community, and if the Republic of Moldova does not fulfill all its obligations, according to the Association Agreement, it will simply lose the chance of becoming part of the EU,” stated Victor Alexeev.

The debate “Which is the ‘lesser evil’ for the Republic of Moldova: unstable parliamentary majority, early elections, union, something else?” was the 49th installment of the series of debates “Development of political culture by public debate” that are held with the support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
