The day of January 27, when the about 6 million victims of the Holocaust are remembered, today acquires even sadder, darker and more worrisome nuances. The Holocaust is the drama of the whole mankind, not of a separate nation. Many believed that the humanity learned the lesson, the lesson of the Holocaust. Regrettably, it seems that the lesson hasn’t been learned and today more than ever, we need a common vote against evil, President Maia Sandu stated in the commemoration ceremony that was held in Chisinau, IPN reports.
“How could those horrors happen in the 20th century? What moves, what dysfunctionality in government systems lead to the appearance and justification of such atrocities? What conscience manipulation instruments produced such malefic results? There are hundreds of thousands of human tragedies. Many of these tragedies remain unknown. The bleeding traces of history continue to appear at the surface after decades. I’m now thinking about the 500 pairs of boots that were recently found in a mass grave in Tiraspol. Who were those people? Who were those who pulled the trigger? Who had to remove the veil of time to reveal the truth from limestone holes?” noted Maia Sandu.
Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița said that this day is a sad one all over the world. It is a mourning day that reminds of a black page in the history of mankind. “We commemorate millions of innocent people – Jews, Romanies and people of other nationalities who were prey to a monstrous regime. It is important to discuss about the tragic destiny of those who were killed in the name of a criminal ideology. The assumption of this dramatic and shameful past by us, as mankind, is a moral obligation. It is important to make known the sufferings of those people and to teach a lesson of respect for the life of each person to the current and future generations,” noted the official.
The president of the Jewish Community in the Republic of Moldova Alexandr Bilinkis said that half of the victims of the Holocaust were women. The children were also among the victims. The children and women were unable to do hard work. The women were subject to medical experiments and there are no words to describe these inhuman actions. “The Jews, the Roma, people of other nationalities became only statistics in the chronic of Nazi crimes. They deserve to be remembered,” stated Alexandr Bilinkis.
The Holocaust is the term for the murder of around six million Jews by the Nazi regime and their collaborators during the Second World War. Between 1941 and 1945, the Nazis sought to eliminate the entire Jewish community of Europe. Six million of the eleven million European Jews perished. The Holocaust mainly occurred in Eastern Europe, in places such as Poland and Ukraine. Among the victims were 1.5 million children.
