The Chisinau streets Veronica Micle and Mitropolitul Varlaam will become pedestrian areas from March 1. According to the authorities, for the time being the two streets will be pedestrian only on Saturday and Sunday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
In the February 20 meeting of Chisinau City Hall officials, acting head of the General Architecture, Urbanism and Land Relations Division Radu Blaj said the pedestrian areas will include the sections between Pushkin and Alecsandri streets. According to him, certain technical moments are to be specified, like the redirection of transport.
The attraction of pedestrians is another technical aspect. “There will be more pedestrians on Varlaam St because there are many recreational and cultural facilities on this street,” said Radu Blaj.
Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca instructed the Public Transport and Communications Division and the municipal police to prepare a scheme for diverting the units of transport and placing the necessary road signs on the two streets. He said that the pedestrian areas may be extended to Armeneasca St over time and will work only on the weekend.
The mayor asked that the district heads also identify by a street in every district that can be transformed into pedestrian area. He said that an entire quarter in Chisinau may become a pedestrian area in the future.
