Thomas Markert, the Deputy Secretary of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe, considers that there is an objective necessity to modify the Constitution of Moldova. During a bilateral meeting with the Head of Parliament and Caretaker President of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu, he assured that the Venice Commission will provide the necessary support in implementing the constitutional reform, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the presidential press service.
Thomas Markert said the modification of the supreme law is essential for Moldova's future given that the Parliament cannot be dissolved endlessly, until a parliamentary group obtains 61 seats to be able to elect the head of state.
Speaking about the work of the constitutional reform commission, Mihai Ghimpu stressed that a relevant bill will be submitted to the Venice Commission for examination. He also said that t a working group composed of constitutional law experts is analyzing the Constitution of Moldova to identify the shortcomings. Afterward, the commission will decide whether to adopt a new Constitution or to modify the present one, especially the articles concerning the election of the head of state. “We want the Constitution to ensure the efficient functioning of the state institutions and to facilitate the society's democratic development,” Mihai Ghimpu said.
