Venice Commission delegation to visit Chisinau

A delegation of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) and of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights will pay a working visit to Moldova on January 20-22. According to a communiqué from Parliament, the visit is made in connection with the reforms initiated by the authorities, including in justice and the electoral sector, IPN reports.

The delegation, led by the Secretary of the Venice Commission Thomas Markert, will have meetings with Speaker Igor Corman, Deputy Speakers Andrian Candu, Oleg Bodrug and Liliana Palihovici and with MPs from the parliamentary majority and the opposition.

The European officials will also have discussions with the president of the Constitutional Court Alexandru Tanase, Minister of Justice Oleg Efrim and chairman of the Central Election Commission Iurie Ciocan. The delegation will meet with representatives of civil society and international organizations working in Moldova.

Earlier, Igor Corman submitted a bill with amendments to the electoral system of Moldova to the Venice Commission. The amendments provide for the introduction of the joint vote. The politician said the delegation will hold discussions with the parliamentary groups and, if the bill is endorsed, Parliament will start modifying the electoral system.
