The president of the Armenian diaspora in Moldova Venera Gasparean said her son David Davitean was beaten during four hours in Penitentiary No. 13 and, as a result, he suffered multiple traumas. According to her, David Davitean is in a serious state, but the penitentiary’s administration does not allow him to be examined and treated by a neurosurgeon and a traumatologist.

In a news conference at IPN, Venera Gasparean said on June 21 this year her son was beaten with wood slabs and aluminum sticks and this suffered multiple serious traumas, including a concussion, arm, nose and rib fractures. He also has a lot of bruises. After this incident, an ambulance was called only after six hours. Her son was taken to the National Emergency Medicine Institute, but didn’t benefit from the necessary medical assistance there and was taken back to the penitentiary.

The family’s lawyer Ludmila Bolocan said that three weeks after the incident David Davitean still has headaches, his ears are bleeding and he most probably has cranium fissures. Doctors recommended placing him under intensive care, but he was taken back to Penitentiary No. 13, where he is administered not specialized treatment, but the medicines brought by his family. He does not eat appropriately, cannot receive parcels and cannot have meetings with his family.

The lawyer noted that she sought help from the competent institutions so that David Davitean is hospitalized for treatment. Even if he obtained the court’s permission to receive treatment at a specialized institution at his own expense, the man is not allowed to treat himself. “He should be allowed to receive treatment. We agreed with the doctor who is to treat him. We are to only obtain the permission of the component bodies,” stated Ludmila Bolocan.

Another lawyer for the family Alexandru Bodnariuc said that no one has been yet held accountable for this act of torture. The current state of David Davitean shows particular persons decided to cause him injuries intentionally. “The penitentiary’s administration is responsible for the life of David Davitean. How can a person be beaten for four hours, but the penitentiary’s administration does not intervene?” he asked.

The lawyers also said they notified the law enforcement agencies, nongovernmental organizations, including the Office of the People’s Ombudsman, and international organizations so that these become involved.
