The trial regime applied on the Moldovan-Ukrainian border for motor vehicles registered in the Transnistrian region was suspended on January 20, IPN has learned from the Reintegration Policies Bureau.

In a press release, the Bureau said the data collected by the competent bodies during the past ten days will be analyzed to determine the demand for trips to Ukraine and for neutral-design license plates on the part of inhabitants of the Transnistrian region. The subsequent decisions will depend on the analysis results and will be made public.

Three days ago, Tiraspol informed the official Chisinau that as of January 24 it will prevent all the types of motor vehicles registered in the Republic of Moldova from crossing Transnistria’s border with Ukraine, in retaliation for the restrictions imposed by Moldova on Transnistrian motor vehicles.

Later the same day, as a result of a telephone conversation with the Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselskii, President Igor Dodon said the responsible institutions of Chisinau and Tiraspol are to “immediately” find solutions to not allow the situation related to the movement of motor vehicles with Moldovan license plates to Ukraine to worsen and to prevent eventual difficulties for the citizens.

In a statement published on January 20, the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” says that it categorically condemns the opportunism of Igor Dodon, who, being in Moscow, addressed the issue with the leader of the separatist Transnistrian region over the phone, actually flouting the legal norms on the movement of motor vehicles registered in the region. The party requested to immediately convene the parliamentary commission on national security, defense and public order and to invite officials in charge of the Transnistrian settlement process to it.

On January 10 this year, Moldova’s Border Police stopped implementing the temporary exception concerning the measures of control of motor vehicles registered in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova. This way, the drivers who wanted to cross the state border had to comply with the law on the registration of particular units of transport.
