The large number of cases in which Moldova is found guilty by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) must worry the ones that pass judgements that are quashed by the Court, Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev told the reporters. He said that the implementation of legislation for holding accountable the persons to blame for Moldova’s conviction will improve the situation. The damages must be paid by those that made the decisions and not by the Government, which even if not guilty, is obliged to pay the compensations awarded by the Court, the Premier said. Vasile Tarlev stated that the Moldovan judicial system has week chains, but the situation can be improved if the ill-trained judges have the possibility of attending refresher courses. To date, the Government of Moldova was found guilty by the ECHR in over 100 cases and obliged to pay about 1.8 million euros for damages.
