Moldovan society inappropriately reacts to the behavior of the  politicians who robbed the banking system and now cannot agree to form a new government owing to internal intrigues. The people must stage an uprising to oppose such behavior by politicians and to penalize them, the head of the Democracy at Home Party Vasile Costiuc said in the public debate “How appropriate the behavior of the real and potential participants in the negotiations on the formation of a government coalition is in the current situation in Moldova: extra-parliamentary views”, staged by IPN News Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova.

“I’m furious and feel powerless because I cannot change something. In a society where everything is economically and politically monopolized, success and development are impossible. Before 2009, there was direct subordination to one political clan, but two clans came to power afterwards. In 2009, we said that everything is sad and serious and put hope in our politicians. In six years, after harsh struggles between them, one clan is now again in power and this clan controls everything. I think the government is appropriate because our society is fully inappropriate. Society should have opposed such behavior and should have removed the rulers, not smile at them. It’s said because the politicians reproduce and the new generations of politicians are similar to them. I’m afraid that we will have the same political class during the next five-ten years,” stated the leader of the Democracy at Home Party.

Vasile Costiuc sees no reason for holding early legislative elections soon as the Democratic Party has all the necessary instruments for forming a new government now. “I think the Party of Socialists, even if it can seem strange, does not want early elections because, in an electoral competition with Renato Usatyi’s party, it will gain half of what it won in last year’s elections. As it represents the opposition, it insists on this idea knowing that early elections can be in fact avoided. I think that if votes to choose the head of state in several months are not found, a split will be caused inside the Liberal Democratic Party as they did earlier with regard to the Liberal Party. Now those from the PLDM realize that they will not enter Parliament as a result of early elections and for them it is better to stay in Parliament for another three years,” he stated.

The politician noted that the government programs of the parties are very good, but are not implemented. “We should now focus only on the Association Agreement with the EU. Even if early elections are held in several months, I don’t think that changes will occur in the future legislature. If the election threshold is not decreased, nothing will change as the extraparliamentary parties will not be given chances. The threshold should be 2-3% for parties and lower for independent candidates so as to stimulate the active people not to enter parties, but to run independently. I would introduce the mandatory vote and the ‘vote against all’ option as well as electronic voting because we have citizens abroad who think in a different way and would vote in a different way,” said the head of the Democracy at Home Party.

The public debate “How appropriate the behavior of the real and potential participants in the negotiations on the formation of a government coalition is in the current situation in Moldova: extraparliamentary views” is the 45th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are supported by the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
