The Government led by Natalia Gavrilița has managed the situation in Moldova amid several crises, that is why it should be considered a success that it has resisted. And although sociological data show that the outgoing Government did not enjoy much popular support, the executive demonstrated that it can react in the most unfavorable conditions, Vasile Cantarji, of the sociological company СBS Research, said during an IPN debate.

The sociologist compared the level of trust of the population in the person of several prime ministers after one year of their mandate. According to the polls, the Government led by Vasile Tarlev (52%), Iurie Leancă (49%), Zinaida Griceanîi (43%), Vlad Filat (43%) enjoyed the greatest confidence. The least trust was in the Government of Valeriu Strelet (10%), Ion Sturza (15%) and the one led by Chiril Gaburici (15%). The level of popular support for the Government led by Natalia Gavrilița was 25%.

Vasile Cantarji said that the dimensions of the crises were far beyond the ability of any government to manage them and remain seen positively in public opinion. According to him, you cannot come out of a major crisis as a winner, but the question is rather how you are able to contain the losses. The smaller the losses, the better you did. “We are a quite vulnerable population and the degree of satisfaction with the government’s actions is very strongly influenced by indicators such as the evolution of prices”, explained the sociologist.

Cantarji noted that the outgoing Government reached a historical record in Moldova by providing enormous financial support to the population in relation to GDP. On the other hand, he opined that the biggest shortcoming of the outgoing Government is “very poor communication, even miscommunication in certain situations, which often created the impression of a lack of transparency”.

Vasile Cantarji mentioned that the priorities announced by the prime minister-designate Dorin Recean mostly coincide with the main concerns of the citizens. According to polls, the first concern of citizens is prices. And one of the priority areas announced by Dorin Recean was the economic one: “a new life for the economy, by granting more resources, investments to businesses, small and medium enterprises”. “If the government succeeds in boosting the economy, this will reduce the concern about prices and poverty”, he said.

The sociologist added that Dorin Recean prioritizes discipline and order as well as security, which is an important thing, considering that the Ukraine war is second biggest concern of the population. Also, Cantarji remarked that the concerns announced by Dorin Recean lack the indirect fight against corruption, despite the fact that the current government was voted in the last parliamentary elections specifically for the promise to fight corruption.

The debate was the 273rd installment of the Political Culture Series, run by IPN with the support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
