The former director of the Security and Intelligence Service Vasile Botnari was remanded in custody for 25 days. He will be held at the remand prison of the National Anticorruption Center. A decision to this effect was taken by the Ciocana Court, IPN reports.

“As a result of the examination of the anticorruption prosecutor’s request, the judges of the Ciocana Court ordered to place the former SIS director in remand detention for a 25-day period, at the NAC’s remand prison,” said Mariana Cherpec, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Vasile Botnari is investigated for unjust enrichment. He denies any wrongdoing.

According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, Vasile Botnari is suspected of purchasing real estate and securities through third persons while holding public posts in 2014-2019 and registered these in the name of relatives or right-hand persons so as to hide the incomes that he could not justify legally.
