Moldova must recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, two years after the Russian-Georgian conflict of August 2008, the leader of the sociopolitical movement “Ravnopravie” Valery Klimenko considers. In a news conference on August 6, he said he spoke in the name of the Russian-speaking members of the organization, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Valery Klimenko, after Russia recognized the two Georgian regions, the Moldovan politicians did not adopt a clear position. “Instead of openly condemning the barbarian actions of Georgia and lending a hand to the victims of aggression in South Ossetia, the politicians in Moldova hid behind ambiguous statements about which they forgot immediately. They thus showed that they do not depend on the Moldovan people’s will, but on the wishes of their colleagues from Washington and Brussels,” he said. “Everything depends on the will and wisdom of our administration, but our governors do not show such qualities. We hope things will change over time and if the government is replaced.” Asked if “Ravnopravie” will demand recognizing the independence of Transnistria as well, Valery Klimenko said that if Moldova acts as Georgia in South Ossetia in the summer of 2008, the Transnistrian region will be recognized. Founded in 1998, the sociopolitical movement “Ravnopravie” promotes the interests of the Russian-language speakers in Moldova. In the March 2005 elections, the last election in which “Ravnopravie” took part, it polled 2.83% of the votes and did not enter Parliament.
