Valeriu Strelet: Settlement of Transnistrian conflict is a top priority

Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet, in a meeting with the Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova Michael Scanlan, said the settlement of the Transnistrian despite is one of the top priorities of the Cabinet. He noted that the Government aims to stimulate the process of implementing the provisions of the Free Trade Agreement with the EU, which will offer all the economic entities, including those from the Transnistrian region, the chance of benefitting from the opportunities of an advantageous trade regime with the EU, IPN reports.

Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet highly appreciated the OSCE’s role in the settlement process and the support provided by this organization to Moldova in different areas.

The meeting also discussed the prospects of approving soon the strategy for integrating the minorities that was worked out with the support of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities. The two officials also spoke about the situation in Gagauzia and the interaction of the central authorities and the local administration of Gagauzia. In this connection, the Premier expressed his confidence that the new Government and the region’s administration will cooperate efficiently.

For his part, Ambassador Michael Scanlan underlined the importance of strengthening the institutional capacity and coordinating the Government’s policies concerning the Transnistrian conflict settlement process. He welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement about the creation of a permanent parliamentary working group on the problems of Gagauzia in one of the first sittings of Parliament this autumn, made in Comrat last week.
