Moldova supports all the actions taken by the UN to prevent conflicts and combat international terrorism and disarmament and considers that all the countries should take an active part in the achievement of these priorities, Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet said in his speech from the main UN rostrum within the high-level segment of the 70th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly, IPN reports.

According to the Government’s press service, the Premier said that Moldova deposited the instrument of ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty in an event held on the sidelines of the high-level segment. Valeriu Strelet mentioned the contribution made by Moldova to the UN peacekeeping missions by deploying detachments to Kosovo, Sudan and the Central African Republic.

The Prime Minister spoke particularly about the deterioration of the security and cooperation system in Europe following the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the waging of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. “The Republic of Moldova is for the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Donbas, in accordance with the agreement signed in Minsk, and respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We make common cause with the Ukrainian people in these difficult moments,” said Valeriu Strelet.

Speaking about the Transnistrian conflict settlement process, Valeriu Strelet pleaded for its resolving by identifying a special status, by observing Moldova’s integrity and sovereignty. He also reiterated the necessity of withdrawing the foreign military troops and munitions from Moldova’s territory, in compliance with the international commitments and constitutional provisions.

In his speech, the Prime Minister also underlined the importance of observing human rights, which are violated in many parts of the world. Moldova actively cooperates within the UN Universal Periodic Review, implementing the National Plan of Action for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

Referring to the Post-2015 Development Agenda, Valeriu Strelet said that Moldova supports the initiatives of the United Nations and its member states on climate change. The country plans to increase the use of renewable energy sources by 20% until 2020. He approved of the positive effects of the implementation of the Moldova – EU Association Agreement on the country’s development, saying this document brings Moldova closer to the EU at political and economic levels and contributes to modernizing Moldovan society based on the European and universal values, such as democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights.
