The principle of separation of powers has been violated in Moldova for over five years and society keeps silent, becoming an accomplice to the violation of the Constitution, expert in international relations and security Valeriu Ostalep said in IPN’s public debate “How to assess the promise made by a politician”.

He noted that the principle of separation of powers is not a nice phrase, but is one of the guarantees of the democratic state. “When one intends to subdue slightly and then more and later everyone and everything, the principle of separation of powers is the guarantee that this wish will not be easily fulfilled,” stated Valeriu Ostalep.

According to him, the wish to rule alone is typical of all the Moldovan rulers who governed during the last 30 years, but such scandalous deviations as those committed during the past year have never been witnessed earlier.

Valeriu Ostalep believes society should react to such departures, but it keeps silent. “Our politicians keep the tune: they hold a post and then want another post with broader powers. The incumbent President, who has reduced powers, hasn’t yet told us what he did during the previous term, but already started to claim extended powers ahead of Parliament and society. This is nonsense and arrogance. But he goes on as he knows that society will not oppose,” he concluded.

The public debate “How to assess the promise made by a politician” was organized as part of the mini-series “We and the President: who elects who and who represents who?” that forms part of the project “Developing political culture through public debates”. IPN News Agency stages the public debates with the assistance of the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
