Valeriu Munteanu, Save Bessarabia Union candidate for Chișinău mayor, said that the municipality needs local police which will be subordinated to the Mayor's Office.
According to Valeriu Munteanu, once the local police is established, his main concern will be the safety of city residents, upon which he will act by taking all necessary legal actions in order to ensure safety efficiently and as soon as possible. Local police would be responsible for traffic policing and combating illegal parking. Additionally, the local police will handle issues regarding shelterless animals, environmental protection and construction work discipline.
Valeriu Munteanu believes that a reform aimed at establishing the local police would be best to take place at the beginning of the mandate of local authorities, which will be elected on October 20. He added that the Ministry of Internal Affairs has hindered the development of relations between the police and local public authorities.
He said that though the municipal police exists, due to being subordinated to the MAI, it has done more harm than good, including by obstructing Chișinău City Hall activity.
