The aspirant for the office of President of Moldova Valeriu Giletski made a call to the people, urging them to sign in his favor. He said that he has collected over 10,000 signatures so far, but needs at least 15,000, IPN reports.
Valeriu Giletski stated that particular legal provisions hamper the signature collection process. He referred to the principle of territorial representativeness that obliges the potential candidates for the presidency to collect by at least 600 signatures in half of the territorial-administrative units of the second level. “As an MP, before taking the decision to run in elections, I asked that this provision should be modified both in the debates in the first reading and by amendments made in the second reading. In my opinion, such provisions should be removed from the law as we elect the President of the Republic of Moldova, not the head of a district,” he said.
The politician noted that he feels discriminated by this unjustified provision. Valeriu Giletski considers it impinges not only on his rights and the rights of other independent candidates, but also on the rights of the thousands of supporters of each of them.
