The current Government, despite the lack of foreign financing, not only covered the budget deficit, but also ensured larger budget revenues that enabled to raise salaries and pensions, even if modestly. Respectively, the welfare and life of the citizens improved slightly, Deputy Parliament Speaker Valeriu Giletski stated in the public debate “Year 2018: accomplishments, failures and challenges in Moldova’s European integration” that was the 99th installment of the series “Developing political culture through public debates” staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

According to the official, despite the contradictions existing in society on the issue, figures do not lie and the results in the economic and social sectors cannot be challenged. Figures show economic growth and larger budget revenues. The Government also limited bureaucracy, reduced the number of inspection bodies, etc. “These results will be multiplied if political stability is maintained and the provisions adopted by Parliament are implemented,” he stated.

Valeriu Giletski noted there are also failures, mainly in the justice sector and this problem will be transmitted to the next Parliament and Government that will have to show political will to do much more profound reforms and to ensue equitable justice. Even if efforts have been made during many years to reform the justice sector, not much was done and the made progress cannot secure people’s confidence in justice.

In another development, the official said sometimes the government is not to blame for things that happen in Moldova, like the case of non-independent media outlets. It is not right to accuse someone if these want to come to or remain in power as other politicians, including from the opposition, also struggle for power. “The obtaining of power is the stake in politics. No one comes to politics for the sake of politics. How to use the power - in the interests of the country or of other groups -  is another question.

As to the people’s role in elections, he said these play a decisive role in all the processes, but the effort to persuade the citizens is made by politicians. The polarization of society is a mistake as a government should leave room for efficient communication as well.

The debate “Year 2018: accomplishments, failures and challenges in Moldova’s European integration” forms part of the series of public debates staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova as part of the project “Developing political culture through public debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
