Deputy Parliament Speaket Valeriu Ghiletski will run independently in the single-member constituency that covers the United States and Canada. On December 26, the politician submitted the documents required for registering the initiative group to the Chisinau District Electoral Council and asked for the subscription lists for running in the February 24, 2019 elections, IPN reports.
“I decided to run independently in this constituency as I know rather well the diaspora in the United States and Canada. I think I can represent our citizens who live in the U.S. with dignity. I will now focus on the process of collecting signatures. I will collect signatures in the United States and in the Republic of Moldova as well as the legislation allows for this. I want to have signatures also from our diaspora who lives in the U.S. Later I will submit the documents for being registered as an independent candidate in the parliamentary elections of 2019,” Valeriu Ghiletski told the press.
He noted he considers he has sufficient chances of winning, but any campaign implies a struggle and electoral competition. He voiced hope the competition will be fair, in accordance with the international standards, and will be won by the candidate who is most trusted by the citizens who live in the United States and Canada.
“Constituency No. 51 is the most suitable for me given that I know those people. They also know me. In a campaign and in the parliamentary activity, the people’s confidence in their MP counts a lot. I think we should have closer ties with the country. We will plead for such ties. In fact, the people’s possibility of having their representatives in Parliament is an element of the mixed system. I assume this responsibility and, having a rich experience, as an MP and a rich international experience, I know those from the U.S. very well – congressmen, senators, and those from Canada. This will help me represent our citizens at local and international levels,” noted Valeriu Ghiletski.
The politician added he will make a visit to Vancouver in the nearest future.
