The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) selected Valeriu Ghiletski as chairman of the standing Committee on the Election of Judges to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), IPN reports.
According to the Parliament’s press service, this is a novelty for the Republic of Moldova, Valeriu Ghiletski being the first Moldovan MP chosen to this post. The Committee that will be chaired by the Deputy Speaker of Moldova’s Parliament is responsible for the examination of candidates for the post of judge to the ECHR on behalf of the Council of Europe Member States.
“This is a big responsibility both at personal level and at national level given the key role played by the Committee that I have the honor of chairing in the process of selecting judges to the most important European justice institution,” stated Valeriu Ghiletski.
The Deputy Speaker of Moldova’s Parliament has over 12 years’ experience in European parliamentarianism. Earlier, Valeriu Ghiletski was, in turn, chairman of the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development and vice president of the PACE.
