“In light of the Ukraine war, we demand the security of the Republic of Moldova to be ensured through integration of this territory into the Romanian and Euro-Atlantic space”, state a group of Romanian legislators who were among the 271 signers of Moldova’s Declaration of Independence 31 years ago. The deputies of the first Moldovan Parliament call on the international community to protect the Republic of Moldova from Russian military aggression and to offer it “NATO’s security umbrella” once it’s reunited with Romania.

A joint statement by the group says that the signers of the Declaration of Independence were aware of the “menace coming from the East”, including the eventuality of an “occupation war”.

“In light of the Ukraine war, of the brutal bombardment with Russian missiles sustained by peaceful settlements near the border with the Republic of Moldova (in the oblasts of Odesa and Vinnytsia), given all the external and internal factors, we see no other viable solution for the defense of all Moldovan citizens than to call on the US President Joe Biden and the US Congress to intervene diplomatically and ensure the security of our territory, which lacks military defense capabilities, by integrating it definitively and irreversibly into the Romanian and Euro-Atlantic space”, stated on the group’s behalf Valentin Dolganiuc, ex-MP and ex-deputy prime minister, during a press conference.

Also, the former MP complains that the current government treats those who supported Moldova’s Independence with neglect. “Marginalized and roughed up, forced to look for work in foreign countries, at retirement age, they are left to die of hunger... Those who walked in the first lines, those who dedicated their lives to the struggle to return home, many of them were given a monthly pension of 1131 lei. Those who pulled the Republic of Moldova out of the Russian empire, voting for the Declaration of Independence, deserve that much”, says the statement.

Valentin Dolganiuc says that the Declaration of Independence can be interpreted as a declaration of Moldova’s unification with Romania, and this aspiration must be accomplished as quickly as possible. “We really want this statement to reach the top echelons of power both in Chisinau and Bucharest. For this political class to listen to the grievances of those who drew the Romanian vector of the Republic of Moldova in the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence, if we read it with a magnifying glass, is nothing but a declaration of Union, of returning home. This has been ignored since 1994 when the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova was adopted by the pro-Russian revanchists through the Democratic Agrarian Party and the Socialist Party”, Valentin Dolganiuc declared.
