The so-called presidential elections held in the Transnistrian region on December 11 were won by Vadim Krasnoselski. According to the local central electoral authority, 62.3% of the electors voted for this candidate. Current Transnistrian leader Yevgheny Shevchuk polled 27.38% of the ballot.
A number of 260 polling places opened at 7am and closed at 8pm on December 11. The voter turnout was 59.16%. The minimum voter turnout is 25%.
The candidates who ran in the elections are: mother of three Irina Vasilaki, unemployed (0.6% of the vote), so-called prosecutor of Transnistria Alexandr Deli (0.55%), ex-president of the so-called constitutional court of the region Vladimir Grigoriev (0.67%), leader of the local Communist Party Oleg Horjan (3.17%), chairman of the so-called Supreme Soviet Vadim Krasnoselski (62.3%) and incumbent leader of Transnistria Yevgheny Shevchuk (27.38%).
Over 3.5% of the electors voted ‘against all’. The elections were monitored by over 100 observers, who said that the voting was organized appropriately and there were recorded no serious violations.
On December 12, the central election commission of Transnistria will hand over the certificate of ‘president of Transnistria’ to Vadim Krasnoselski. The self-proclaimed republic of Transnistria is perceived by the international community as a component part of Moldova.
