The purchase of COVID-19 vaccines could take place with derogation from the law on public procurement. This possibility is being considered given the alarming rise in the number of new cases of COVID-19, particularly of death, Parliament Speaker Zinaida Grechanyi stated after a meeting that involved Cabinet members and acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi, IPN reports.
According to Zinaida Grechanyi, the method of buying vaccines is to be discussed in the meeting of the Parliament’s Standing Bureau, together with the acting Prime Minister and secretaries of state of the responsible ministries.
“In the current very difficult situation, it is imperative to urgently launch the mass vaccination of the population so as to stop the spread of the pandemic and to prevent an eventual worsening of things,” stated Zinaida Grechanyi.
Earlier, acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi said that the financial resources for purchasing a consignment of about 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been identified and the necessary procedures will start soon. The official didn’t yet say what vaccines namely will be purchased.
The first COVID-19 vaccines - 21,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines donated by Romania – were delivered to Moldova last week. The given consignment contains the first and second doses of vaccines, intended for 10,800 health workers. In several days, Moldova received 14,400 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines shipped through the COVAX Facility. Over 5,000 persons have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Moldova so far.
