The Romanian party Save Romania Union (USR) announced its support for the candidate of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase in the new local mayoral elections in Chisinau.

In a news conference at IPN, USR MP Matei Dobrovie, vice chairman of the commission for Romanian communities outside the country’s borders of the Chamber of Deputies, said the party he represents does this because the signal for the parliamentary elections is given from the Chisinau City Hall, while the stakes for Moldova are huge. The stakes concern Moldova’s real rapprochement with the European Union and Romania or its entry into an area close to Russia, where discussions about the European course and the union will be impossible.

“We think the withdrawal of the “rabbit candidates” and the supporting of Andrei Nastase by all the so-called pro-European, unionist and other forces are the only solution for blocking his negative trend and for counteracting the Plahotniuc-Dodon duo that is interested in having its candidates Ion Ceban and Silvia Radu in the runoffs,” stated the Romanian official.

Senator for Romanians from outside the borders Radu Mihail, who is in charge of international relations at the National Bureau of the USR, said that during his visit to Moldova he had discussions with the Party “Action and Solidarity, the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” and the Liberal Democratic Party and found out their viewpoints on the political developments in Moldova and how they intend to involve the people best to keep Moldova on the path to modernization and Europeanization.

The Romanian officials consider this year is crucial for Moldova and Romania should powerfully support the players of the positive change in Moldova – the NGOs, strong civil society, independent press, new parties that need support, all the entities that plead for de-oligarchization and Europeanization.

On the other hand, the USR MPs said all the interlocutors with whom they discussed during the last few days underlined there is a risk that the critical mass that supports Moldova’s transformation will dissipate if this autumn’s parliamentary elections are not won by authentic pro-European and anti-oligarchic forces, namely the PPPDA and PAS.

The USR noted that as an opposition party, it aims to follow and assess the use of the money provided to Moldova in assistance and to determine how visible these investments are here.
