The Senate of the State University of Moldova (USM) said the closing of a number of dorms is an acute necessity as these are in a precarious state and can endanger the lives of students now that earthquakes occur more often in the region, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Senate says that the efforts made to provide the students of the USM with better living conditions that meet modern standards are misinterpreted by some of the media outlets, which resort to manipulation and disseminate false information. In this connection, the USM provides clarification.

In 2008, when having 26,000 students, the University had 16 dorms that provided 3,000 places. Three-four years ago, dorms No. 8 and 9 were closed. Dorms No. 6 and 7 had later the same fate. The reduction in the number of dorms does not yet affect the students’ access to them, according to the USM. In 2016, the USM, having 12,000 students, had 11 dorms with 2,100 places. Meanwhile, there were modernized two dorms located on Gh. Casu St. These offer modern living conditions (two-room apartments).

“The recent tragedies in Italy following the devastating earthquakes require a system approach to damaged buildings. The mentioned dorms form part of such buildings and this fact is confirmed by technical examinations,” it is said in the press release.

The Senate notes that it will continue to support the modernization of dorms and will soon initiate measures to modify the public-private partnership concerning the modernization of the Tighina campus (dorms No. 1,2,3,4).
