The use of telephones by students during class will be regulated so that they can focus more on the educational process. A legislative proposal to this effect will be submitted by the Ministry of Education and Research next week.
“We will regulate the use of mobile phones in schools during classes only. So not during breaks. In principle, students will be able to bring their devices to school, but during classes they will have to leave them in places designated specifically for this. They will not be allowed to use them in class”, Minister of Education Dan Perciun told a news conference.
He added that Moldova is not the first country to introduce such rules. “This has been happening for a long time in many European countries. In France there is a wide discussion about a much tougher regulation of mobile phones. We see other European states that have already taken this path. The goal is obvious, to give more space to students to focus on the educational process, rather than on their phones”, noted the minister.
According to him, this initiative has been widely discussed. There have been several surveys done in different formats where both parents and teachers and, to some extent, students as well agreed about the need for such rules.
The proposed amendment to the Education Code will subsequently be supplemented with secondary legislation that will detail the rules and restrictions.
