US will support Moldova in investigating money laundering schemes, prime minister

The United States gave assurances that they would analyse the request of the Republic of Moldova to investigate the bank fraud case and support the Chisinau authorities in bringing the guilty persons to justice. The statement was made by Prime Minister Maia Sandu at a press conference held on September 21, IPN reports.

Presenting the results of her visit to the US, Maia Sandu mentioned that, as regards the theft of the billion, she discussed with officials of the US Department of Justice, FBI and CIA. "Certain persons who have benefited from the theft of the billion have significant properties on US territory. At this stage, we will work with the Moldovan Prosecutor's Office and the US authorities to freeze, then confiscate these assets. Namely, we are talking about Vlad Plahotniuc, who has properties there and who must return what he has stolen to the state," said Maia Sandu.

"I stressed that European integration remained the basic objective of the government, and cooperation with the US in several areas, including in the defines and security sector, was a strategic priority for Moldova," said Maia Sandu.

The prime minister said that, at the meeting with Mike Pence, the US vice president, she received assurances that the US will continue to be a strong partner for the democratic transformation of the Republic of Moldova.

Also, Maia Sandu mentioned that during her visit to the US she discussed regional security and good neighbourly relations with Romania and Ukraine.

During the US visit, Maia Sandu had a meeting with Ivanka Trump, the advisor to the US President. "We discussed the possibility of initiating programs for women, to ensure the involvement of women in political life. We will focus on bringing back the women working abroad for their integration into society and count on US assistance in this regard”, said Maia Sandu.

The visit to the United States of the government delegation led by Prime Minister Maia Sandu took place on September 18-19.
