U.S. Congressman Joe Pitts said that given the barriers that can be placed before Moldova on its path to the EU, the country needs an efficient security system and the United States will continue to be near it. He made the statement in a meeting with the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) Vlad Filat, who is in the U.S. on a visit, IPN reports.
In a communiqué, the PLDM says Joe Pitts is an influential congressman of the United States House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce, who recently registered the Political Support Group for Moldova in the U.S. Congress. Joe Pitts is the author of the draft resolution of the U.S. Congress “In support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova”.
The congressman noted the positive changes seen by Moldova over the last few years and the determination by which reforms are done. This made Moldova remain among the foreign policy priorities of the U.S. The strategic dialogue between the United States and Moldova will cover the bilateral cooperation and will offer the institutional and legal framework needed to dynamically support Moldova in its European integration efforts.
Vlad Filat also had a working meeting with Lyn Debevoise, Director for Eastern Europe of the United States National Security Council. The discussions centered on the provocations witnessed by Moldova in the security area amid the developments in Ukraine and on the future actions in this respect.
The Liberal-Democratic leader visited the International Republican Institute, where he gave a speech before a group of diplomats, experts in security in Eastern Europe and program managers of organizations active in this region. Vlad Filat said the visit he is paying to the U.S. is directly related to Moldova’s European aspirations.
As to the accomplishments achieved by Moldova on its path to the EU, the leader of the PLDM said that Moldova is the only Eastern Partnership country with a government coalition and this fact partially ensured the success of reforms.
