The United States will offer an additional $300 million in emergency aid to Moldova to support the population as well as projects in our country’s energy sector, announced the President’s Office in a press release.

Moldova’s President Maia Sandu and U.S. Ambassador Kent D. Logsdon said the assistance will be offered through USAID, America’s principal foreign aid agency. The intention was voiced by USAID Administrator Samantha Power on Friday in Washington.

The package will include $80 million in direct budget support to offset the surge in electricity prices this winter. Another $135 million will go to support electricity generation projects, which will contribute to the diversification of sources. A further $85 million will be provided to increase the capacity to provide energy from alternative sources and achieve energy independence from Russia.

The Moldovan president expressed her gratitude for the decision, noting that it comes at a very difficult moment for the Republic of Moldova. “Even if they don’t come immediately into the country’s budget, these funds are a sign of support and encouragement for us”, emphasized Maia Sandu.

She added that these resources will enable projects that will help to strengthen our country’s energy independence. “Let me thank Ambassador Logsdon for the good news he brings us on a difficult day. We thank the American people for this substantial and generous help!”, said Maia Sandu.
