To contribute to handling the flow of refugees fleeing from the Russian-Ukrainian war, the U.S. Government will offer the Republic of Moldova over US$30 million over the next six months. The decision was announced by U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Kent D. Logsdon on March 20, during a visit to the Fides refugee center in Chisinau.

The U.S. official familiarized himself with the Center’s functions and even worked as a volunteer, helping serve lunch to people. In his speech, the ambassador said that everyone does their best to support the people of Ukraine, either they are in Ukraine or in the immediate vicinity, like in the Republic of Moldova. “I’m honored to announce that the U.S. offered more than US$30 million to assist refugee relief efforts. In partnership with the Government of the Republic of Moldova and international relief organizations, we will use these funds to help organizations deliver critical relief services such as bedding and hygiene items as well as hot meals at shelters like this all around the country,” stated Ambassador Logsdon.

The official expressed his admiration for the Moldovans’ hospitality. He thanked the Moldovan citizens for receptivity and warmth with which they accepted refugees from the neighboring country.

According to the ambassador, the Republic of Moldova accounts for 10% of the US$300 million that the U.S. offers to a number of states of the region to cope with the flow of Ukrainian refugees. The funds will be mainly distributed through the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Specifically, the U.S. Government, through the Department of State, is providing $8.3 million dollars of these funds to support Catholic Relief Services’ work here in Moldova. USAID will be providing additional assistance very shortly as well.
