The U.S. Embassy in Moldova said yesterday’s unexpected and nontransparent invalidation of the popular election for Chisinau mayor, which yielded a clear victor, is a troubling development that is even now eroding Moldovan citizens’ confidence in the democratic process. The Embassy reminds that the most fundamental principle of a democratic state is the right of the people to select their own leadership, IPN reports.

“The United States is closely examining the details surrounding this decision and we are working with our partners in civil society and in the diplomatic community to ensure that true democratic values prevail,” it is said in a message posted on the Embassy’s Facebook page.

In the evening of June 19, the Centru branch of the Court of Chisinau municipality decided to invalidate the results of the new mayoral elections held in Chisinau. The lawyers for mayor-elect Andrei Nastase challenged the decision at the Appeals Court. The Party “Platform Dignity and Truth”, alongside the Party “Action and Solidarity” and the Liberal Democratic Party, intends to mount a protest in front of the Chisinau City Hall this evening.
