The Embassy of the Unites States follows attentively all the events related to the presidential campaign, U.S. Ambassador to Moldova James D. Pettit said in a meeting with Valeriu Giletski, who intends to run independently for the presidency. The U.S. diplomat noted there are signs that cause concern, but he hopes the elections will be free and fair, IPN reports.

“It is important for the new President to enjoy legitimacy and international recognition. A possible failure or non-recognition of the elections would destabilize a lot the situation in the country,” stated James D. Pettit.

The interlocutors discussed subjects related mainly to the campaign prior to the October 30 presidential elections. The ambassador inquired about the signature collection process and the difficulties faced at this stage. Valeriu Giletski stated that this is a difficult process and expressed his regret at the fact that particular amendments to the Election Code, which would have facilitated this process, hadn’t been accepted.

The MP announced his intention to run as an independent candidate for President on August 11.
