The parliamentary majority and the opposition should continue the practice of dialogue and consensus that showed to be possible, for example, in the amendment of the Constitution. Also, urgency and hurry should not be mixed up in the mandate to fight corruption that the government received from the voters, the President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio stated in a press briefing in the Parliament Building, IPN reports.
While in Chisinau on a visit in the wake of the crackdown launched by the new government, the European official said the Venice Commission will soon issue an opinion about the amendments made to the Law on the Prosecution Service.
He welcomed the initiation of changes in the Republic of Moldova. “In the discussions with the parliamentary majority, I urged not to mix up urgency and hurry. The voters ask the government to be absolutely firm in the fight against corruption, seek efficient justice and a better life in this county. To achieve this, they should not hurry, but should reach particular solutions based on as broad consensus with the oppositions as possible and this should be constructive, as it happened in the case of the reform of the Constitution. A dialogue should also exist with civil society,” said Gianni Buquicchio.
Asked about the case of suspended prosecutor general Alexandr Stoianoglo, Gianni Buquicchio said the institution he manages examines laws, not concrete cases.
In Chisinau, the President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio is leading a Council of Europe working group that during October 20-21 will meet with President Maia Sandu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu, and Minister of Justice Sergiu Litvinenco. This will have meetings in the Parliament Building, at the Constitutional Court, the Superior Council of Magistracy, the National Anticorruption Center and the National Integrity Authority.
