Universities besieged by young people

Hundreds of young persons from all over Moldova came to the State University on Monday evening to find out the results of the admission contest. Some of them cried when they saw they were accepted and will be paid awards, while others cried because they were rejected and could not obtain a place at the university on a contract basis, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I have good grades. I’m sure that if I did not obtain a budget-funded place, I was accepted on a contract basis,” said Sorin, a young man from Chisinau, before seeing the results.
Natalia from Pepeni village of Sangerei district filed applications to three faculties. She was happy to find her name in the list of the budget-funded students of the Faculty of Geography.
Corina, a young woman from Briceni, told her mother he was admitted to the Faculty of Mathematics with tears in her eyes. “I won a budget-funded place with an average grade of 8.7. I cannot tell you how happy I am,” she said.
Ion from Nisporeni was not accepted. He said he did not have high hopes of entering the university on a budget-funded place as he knows that all the places are bought beforehand.
Andrei Perjan, the secretary of the admission commission of the State University of Moldova, told Info-Prim Neo that there were submitted over 4,400 applications for 2,425 places. “The number of applications was practically the same as last year,” h said.
Jeni Nastas, the secretary of the admission commission of the Teacher Training University “Ion Creanga”, said they processed more than 5,000 applications for 1,400 places. The number of applications lodged with the Academy of Economic Studies was four times higher than the number of places available.
The secretary of the admission commission of the Technical University of Moldova Sergiu Andronic said they provided 3,500 places, but received 3,800 applications.
A number of 1,640 students applied to the State University of Medicine and Pharmaceutics “Nicolae Testemitanu". The admission commission’s secretary Tatiana Globa said the number of applications this year was almost twice higher than the number of places available.
Most of the universities announced the results of the admission contest on August 2, after 5pm. The University of Medicine will post the results on August 5. The rerun admission contest for the unfilled places will take place between August 3 and 7.
Under the admission plan for 2010, 22,128 students will be accepted to universities, 6,985 of whom on budget-funded places, while 15,143 on a contract basis. The number of students is by 13.9% higher than last year.
