The leader of the regional opposition Movement “United Gagauzia”, Mihail Formuzal, during a press conference on Tuesday, October 3, declared that the appointment of the members of the Central Electoral Committee for the elections of the bascan of the Territorial-Administrative Unit Gagauz-Yeri had several violations of the electoral legislation. According to Formuzal, these violations demonstrate that from the first day of the electoral campaign the forgeries of the elections scheduled for December 3 began. The violations, according to the cited source, start with the fact that the list of the CEC members wasn’t presented to the deputies 5 days in advance, as the legislation provides for; the Committee is not formed from representatives of all Gagauzia regions and does not have members from the opposition forces, but has members of the Communist Party, a fact that disobeys the legislation. The formation evaluates the elections in Gagauzia as an exam for the current government regarding the declarations of democratic norms obedience and the real deeds, Formuzal added. In his opinion, the evolution of fair and democratic elections will have a positive impact on the relations between the Republic of Moldova and international organizations and will contribute to the country’s reunion. Formuzal also announced he has decided to run as an independent candidate for bascan of Gagauza, and at present there are negotiations with several political formations regarding support for him. The electoral campaign for the bascan office will commence on October 4. The last elections of the bascan of Gagauzia took place on October 20, 2002, when head of the UTAG was elected the communists candidate - Gheorghii Tabunscic.
