The leader of the public association Unirea-ODIP Vlad Biletski accuses the administration of the Committee for Saving the Cemetery of Romanian Heroes in Chisinau of sabotaging the project to repair the fence, poles and stairs at the cemetery. In a news conference at IPN, the unionist leader said the Committee’s chairman Veaceslav Verlan filed a complaint to the Prosecutor’s Office and the Chisinau City Hall, demanding to stop the works one year after their launch, even if he publicly announced he will contribute to the renovation of the cemetery.

According to Vlad Biletski, the complaint was filed on May 27 for the reason that there was performed no examination to determine the danger and resistance level of the damaged poles and there is no project that would have been approved by the Academy of Sciences, the General Architecture and Urbanism Division and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research. Vlad Biletski denies the accusations, saying the repair works were coordinated with the local public authorities that authorized them.

The unionist leader noted about 200 people donated money for the cemetery to regain its previous appearance. “The Committee probably banks on a repair projects financed by the Romanian state from which it could benefit,” he stated.

Vlad Biletski also said it is sad when the unionists quarrel between them. “We were sabotaged not by the Socialists or other opponents of ours, but by persons who joined us in the fight. How can one submit a complaint to the Prosecutor’s Office over such a noble thing as the repair of the cemetery?” he asked.

He stated the cemetery wasn’t included in the list of state monuments or cemeteries. In 2007, the upper part of the cemetery was sold and repair works cannot be performed there. The lower part that includes the fence, poles and stairs belongs to the municipality.

The leader of Unirea-ODIP noted any sale and purchase contact can be annulled if the procedures weren’t obeyed. This can be done through court and the state will be obliged to pay damages to the company for the invested amount. A lawsuit should be filed as the sale and purchase contract was signed with serious violations of the law.

According to the data provided by Unirea-ODIP, more than 1,600 soldiers from 18 countries were buried at the Cemetery of Romanian Heroes in Chisinau.
