Instead of celebrating the arrival of the Union Flame in Chisinau on September 1, the organizers of the Great Centenary Assembly said they have to protest after the police blocked the access of three buses with informative materials about the union at the entrance to Chisinau. The buses were heading for the Great National Assembly Square where an event was to start at twelve noon, IPN reports.

Almost 200 persons who walked 1,300 km within the Centenary March from Alba Iulia up to Chisinau as of July 1 brought the Union Flame to the Great National Assembly Square and the event was to be celebrated by giving speeches.

The head of the Civic Movement “Moldova’s Youth” Anatol Ursu said what the government does is shameful. He thanked the participants in the Centenary March who, during two months, walked through rain and heat.

In the opening of the event, Constantin Codreanu, a member of Romania’s Parliament, said the abuses against the unionists started several days ago at a frontier post, where the participants in the march weren’t allowed to cross the border for 24 hours. These were ultimately allowed to pass, not yet the leader of the group of participants George Simion, who was banned again from entering the Republic of Moldova.

According to Constantin Codreanu, the Moldovan rulers act so because they are afraid of Moldova’s union with Romania. The union for them would mean loss of privileges and a direct ticket to jail.

The participants decided to go on a march to the place where the buses were stopped so as to mount a protest there and will then return to the central square of Chisinau.
