The center for the protection of fundamental rights “Sirius”, which is a public association, calls on the people to come to the Great National Assembly Square on March 25 to vote a statement on the recognition of the Union Act of March 27, 1918. Also then, they should ask the two Parliaments, of Moldova and Romania, to adopt a decision on the implementation of the Union Act in the joint sitting that will take place in Bucharest on March 27.
In a news conference at IPN, the association’s representative Anatolie Petrici said the Union Act voted by the People’s Council in Chisinau on March 27, 1918, the royal decree by which this was promulgated and the law of the Parliament of Romania by which the Act was ratified haven’t’ been challenged or abrogated and continue to be valid. “As they are in force, they should be applied so that they produce legal effects,” stated the representative of “Sirius”. He added that the territory where the Republic of Moldova is now situated is the territory of Romania and the citizens are Romanians by birth, no matter whether they have confirmative documents or not.
As regards the statements on the union with Romania signed by Moldovan communities, Anatolie Petrici said these are symbolic and do not claim to have legal effects. The moves were legal and were a manifestation of the freedom of expression. The fact that the state bodies demand that the mayors and local councilors who signed the statements should annul these decisions represents an abuse.
Mayor of Cimislia town Gheorghe Raileanu said he is a convinced unionist and considers that the Moldovans and Romanians form part of the same ethnic community and speak the same language and the union is a national necessity.
Another representative of “Sirius” Ion Rata said the gesture of the mayors who publicly announced the union desideratum, even if it is just a symbolic one, shows that a part of Moldova’s population lives with the union idea.
Vasile Nastase, a member of the same organization, said he supports the mayors’ and councilors’ initiative to vote the union with the motherland. The Romanian state is obliged to become involved and take concrete steps to make the union faster.
The members of “Sirius” called on unionist NGOs to constitute a body that would decide the scenario of the March 25 event. They also invited the senior state officials to the assembly in the central square of Chisinau.
