The Union Council is against the planned visits to Chisinau of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitri Rugozin and Patriarch Kirill. In a news conference at IPN, members of the Council read a joint statement, announcing that they will stage a peaceful protest to express their disagreement.

“The Union Council calls on the Romanians and other language speakers with national dignity to join the steps taken to sensitize the people to the lack of verticality of the power towards Russia and to the danger of discrediting the national interests and the European objective of the Moldovan population,” said the head of the National Liberal Party Vitalia Pavlicenco.

According to Vitalia Pavlicenco, Dmitri Rogozin and Patriarch Kirill come to Chisinau not to encourage or bless the country’s European aspirations, but to press and intimidate the authorities to remain on the Russian orbit and to renounce the Vilnius Summit. The Union Council calls on the Government to show dignity before the intimidation on the part the ‘people sent by Moscow’. ”The Christian population of Moldova continues to be manipulated, while the Moldovan authorities do not encourage the separation of our Church from the Russian Church,” stated Vitalia Pavlicenco.

The chairman of the 1992 War Veterans “Tiras–Tighina” Anatolie Caraman said that Dmitri Rogozin cannot be the accepted in the country as he was the one who killed Moldovan soldiers in the armed conflict of 1992. “I feel pain when I think that the military orchestra of the carabineer troops that returned glorious from the battlefield will have to sing to Rogozin. This is stupidity,” he stated.

He added that Moldova must joint with Romania, while visits of the kind by Russian officials can compromise the union.

The Union Council will protest in front of the Government Building and the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitri Rogozin will come to Chisinau on September 2 and will go to Tiraspol on September 3 to take part in a ceremony that will be held to launch the construction of a hospital. Patriarch Kirill of Moocow and All Russia will visit Moldova on September 7-8.
