The unification of Moldova and Romania requires a favorable domestic and international context. The topic was debated during the talk-show “Punctul pe azi” at TVR Moldova, IPN reports.

Ion Lascenco, head of the National Unity Bloc, said that the unification was a political process that required the right conditions at an international level. “If we have a political class in favor of unification, and we hope we will have it after the 2018 election, we’ll also need a favorable international context. We cannot ignore the great powers”, he argued.

The chairman of the Congress of Teachers in Moldova, Boris Volosatii, thinks the new mixed voting system, in which part of the MPs are elected in constituencies, might help more pro-unification candidates win a seat in the Parliament in the 2018 elections. “We need to do the necessary polls and research to see what human resources are available in which district, in order to exploit the maximum potential of these candidates during the next year’s elections”, said Volosatii.

Vlad Biletchi, head of the “Honor, Dignity and Motherland” Association (Unirea-ODIP), is of the opinion that the unification can happen in 2018, but it depends on the involvement of people on both banks of the Prut. “We need quality people to move this forward. I think it’s realistic in this geopolitical context, where Ukraine can shield us”, he explained.

On Sunday, August 20, about 100 NGOs that advocate the unification of Moldova and Romania created the Centenary Alliance in Bucharest. They will prepare together mass manifestations to celebrated the 100th anniversary of the unification of Romania. In 1918, Basarabia, today’s Republic of Moldova, was the last territory to join Romania and thus complete the creation of Greater Romania, which existed in the inter-war period.
