Historian Alexandru Mosanu, Speaker of Moldovan Parliament between 1991 and 1994, believes that the unification of the two Romanian states, i.e. Moldova and Romania, cannot be done following the German model from 1989. The opinion was given during a public debate, on the topic “The reunification of the two German states – Euro-Atlantic integration for Moldova, through the reunification of the two Romanian states”, reports Info-Prim Neo.
“The German model was good for a certain people, for a certain European, and a certain international conjuncture. Today we cannot follow this example. German people are different from the Romanian people. Why didn’t the unification happen back then, in 1989? A good deal of Basarabian Romanians has no national conscience. Our task is to liquidate the consequences of the Soviet occupation”, pointed out Alexandru Mosanu.
A study done by the Romanian Center for Studies and Strategies was presented at the conference. According to the poll, 87% of Romanian citizens want the unification, and almost 72% of the responders believe that the language spoken by Basarabians is Romanian, and that they are, first of all, Romanians.
According to Alexandru Mosanu, the results of the poll are encouraging, but one must keep in mind the attitude of the political classes of the two states. “We also need an education system based on Romanian national values. Our citizens must clearly understand who they are. Without desire for unification and “Romanianhood”, we are doomed. If we do not keep the flame of “Romanianhood” alive, Basarabians will disappear in a few years”, stated Alexandru Mosanu.
In the context of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Chisinau, on August 22, the debate’s participants said that the high-ranking official might communicate precious information from her state’s experience, since, they say, Germany’s unification was not the product of imperialist agreements, but of the populations desire to be united.
