The city of Ungheni will have more development levers as a Municipality. It would have the autonomy of distributing its own budget. A statement in this sense was made by Andrian Cheptonar, Ungheni city Mayor Counselor, reports Info-Prim Neo. Andrian Cheptonar particularly referred to the current salary system, mentioning that the administration cannot hire more employ, albeit its own resources allow it. “The rules are bureaucratized. For example, the woman who initiated the idea of the local day-care Center chose to be the institution's psychologist, not its manager, since the head of the institution has a much smaller salary”, said the counselor. In his opinion, such an approach is not correct, especially since the city of Ungheni can afford, from its own finances, better salaries for its personnel. “I understand that the districts, which don't accumulate as many financial sources, should also be supported, but it is not right to stop others from growing in order to support others”, said Andrian Cheptonar, who hopes that the situation will change once the city gets more autonomy. An initiative concept, for the Ungheni to become a Municipality, was proposed for public debate. The concept was elaborated by a task force comprised of local and district councilors from Ungheni. Ungheni Mayor Alexandru Ambros, one of the authors, said that the bill is still under discussion, a first draft having been submitted to the State Chancellery. “When an urban settlement grows, some neighboring localities should benefit from certain services. The development of urban centers is a very important thing, since the living level is directly proportional to a locality's level of development. Localities that will enter the Municipality will also be at a win”, stated the Mayor of Ungheni. The following cities, besides Ungheni, are proposed to be upgraded to Municipalities: Cahul, Orhei, and Soroca.
